Jessie Jean Eleanor Hemingway
Jessie Jean Eleanor (Knight) Hemingway of RR3 Brussels passed away at Seaforth Community Hospital on Wednesday, July 23. She was 91.
Eleanor was born in Grey Township on Nov. 11, 1911. The only daughter and the youngest child to James Knight and Christena McNeil, she grew up with her seven brothers Russell, Gordon, Alfred, Walter, James (Elmer), Hector, and Goldwyn on a farm east of Cranbrook, on the 12th concession of Grey (Cranbrook Line). Eleanor attended Listowel High School and Stratford Normal School and taught in several schools including Walton and Glen Allen. Eleanor and Carl were married in July of 1935 and lived in Brussels, Palmerston and Woodstock in the years from 1936 to 1941. They moved to the farm on Lot 6 Con 12 Grey in 1940 and Eleanor lived there until February of this year when she moved to Maplewood Manor in Seaforth.
Eleanor enjoyed and supported the activities of her eight children, spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She spent many hours tending her vegetable and flower gardens. Her giant pumpkins were a great source of pride to her, while her Peace Roses were a great source of joy. Her community involvement included Women's Institute, Brussels Horticultural Society and Brussels United Church Women.
Eleanor enjoyed traveling, walking, lawn bowling, swimming, and playing cards. The fellowship she felt when she attended Brussels Mennonite Fellowship, Senior's Group and Diner's Club in Brussels was very supportive to her in later years.
Eleanor's skills of recitation, sewing, knitting and breadmaking will be cherished memories of her many family members and friends. Her appreciation of the past and her gift to the future is shown in her work with the Grey Township Reunion in collecting memorabilia of Grey SS#1 and making a booklet of pictures of the former SS#1 students, the Huron County Historical Society and her family genealogy.
Eleanor was the beloved wife of the late Joseph Carl Hemingway and will be sadly missed by her children Ruth Axtmann and her husband Jim, of Winthrop; Don Hemingway and his wife Bernice, of Souris, Man.; Marion Godkin and her husband Lavern, of Walton; David Hemingway and his wife Patricia, of Bayfield; Ross Hemingway and his wife Anne, of RR3 Brussels; Laurel East and her husband Wallace, of Wawa; Ray Hemingway and his wife Elaine, of Surrey, B.C.; and Karen Phillips of Dorchester.
She was also loved by her 29 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her seven brothers.
Friends were received by the family from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. on Friday, July 25, at the Schimanski Family Funeral Home, Brussels. A Majestic Women's Institute Service was held at the funeral home Friday evening. The funeral service was conducted at Brussels United Church on Saturday, July 26, at 2 p.m. with Mrs. Joan Golden and Pastor Brent Kipfer officiating. As a tribute, Eleanor's granddaughter Darlene performed solos of How Great Thou Art and In the Garden.
Carrying floral tributes were Kathi Lavoie, Dianne Godkin, Chantelina Phillips, Brianne Hemingway and Linda Bogle.
Pallbearers were Darren Hemingway, Bruce Godkin, Kevin East, Brian Hemingway, Bob Axtmann and Jeffrey Hemingway.
Interment in Cranbrook Cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to Brussels United Church, Brussels Mennonite Fellowship, the Canadian Cancer Society or to the charity of one's choice.
