Married:
- Adapted from information from son J. Allan Shantz
My parents thought they were to be childless, but in the course of events, my uncle David Hintz lost his wife in child birth and 3 of their children ended up with my parents on Hedley Street, Preston, Ontario.
David married again and two of the children returned home to their dad and his new wife. Menno, however, stayed and the story goes, that my mother asked Menno's father David to either take him or let them adopt him. David, my uncle, is supposed to have said, "you better adopt him - I can't handle any more" (my paraphrase). At the adoption proceedings Menno, having only one name was invited to choose another name in addition to Menno. My parents, suggested Walter but Menno said that was a name that was OK for his monkey. He chose Carl, therefore the Carl Menno Shantz. Interesting that he grew up from day one knowing that he had two families. When it was about 22-23 he worked for his blood father for at least a year on the farm (Homestead of John L Hintz) one mile west of the Macton Corner's RC church. on Hwy. 86.
