- (Research):Esther Diana Snyder (nee Dickau) was born at Didsbury, AB o
n October 31, 1919. Her parents, Charles and Anna were both born in Nebraska and came to Didsbury as teenagers to work, met, married in 1908 and raised their family on a farm 5 miles south-east of Didsbury. Esther was the youngest of four children: Lawrence and Harold Dickau, and Evelyn Schellenberg. She attended a country school, .Grande Centre., and was active in a local youth group that called themselves .The Northern Lights.. Throughout her life these friends remained very dear to her. A neighbouring farm boy caught her eye, and she caught him, and she became Mrs. John B. Snyder on April 6,
1943. John and Esther had 4 children: Murray, Marilyn (Richards), Beverely (Doug Dodds) and Darryl (Lynda) and they have added 10 grandchildren; and these have added another 9 great-grandchildren. She had 8 nephews and nieces on the Dickau side and 52 on the Snyder side - John had 14 brothers and sisters. For ten years she was a cook at the Didsbury hospital and received many accolades for her ability to make hospital food taste good. She loved flowers and was renowned for the beautiful sculpted gardens around her home. She was also became a master of .Swedish weaving. in the last several years and all of her children and grandchildren have received some of her handiwork. She loved to travel and has criss-crossed North America, and had an extensive tour of Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. She grew up in the Zion Evangelical Church and has been a member all her life. Her Christian faith was a quiet central core of her life - it provided stability for all of her activities and relationships. She was predeceased by her parents, brothers and her beloved sister .Evie. and a grandson, Kent. The death of John in 2000 was very difficult for her - she missed him every day since then. Esther passed away at the Peter Lougheed Hospital in Calgary December 20th at 7:30pm at the age of 87. Her funeral was held at Zion Evangelical Missionary Church in Didsbury and internment was in the local cemetery.
She will be always be remembered by her extended family and her many friends as a wonderful lady who unselfishly shared her love and kindness with all who crossed her pathway. As a tribute to Esther Snyder, a tree will be planted in the Heartland Tree Memorial Park, Olds. Heartland Funeral Services Ltd., Olds entrusted with arrangements. 403-507-8610.
