- (Research):JOHNS, Galen I. 92, of Goshen, Indiana, formerly a resident of Waterloo, died Sunday afternoon, August 5, at his home in Goshen, Indiana. He was born February 26, 1920, in Indiana, to Ira S. and Elizabeth (Rickert) Johns. He was a pastor, conference secretary, teacher, and school principal. He was a member of College Mennonite Church. He married Edith Mae Hoover on May 16, 1943, at Clinton Frame Mennonite Church. She died February 5, 2009. He married Areta Graber Lehman January 30, 2010, in Goshen. She survives. Also surviving are his children, daughter-in-law Jeanette Johns, Mecosta, Michigan; Steven (Debra) Johns, Goshen; Lois (Jim) Kaufmann, New Paris, Indiana; Loren (Rachel) Johns, Goshen; and Lindale (Melanie) Johns, Benton, Indiana; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; son, Joe Alan Johns (in 2003); daughter, Rachel Nanlee (in 1954); six sisters and one brother. He was the last living member of his immediate family. He was ordained minister on January 25, 1948. He was pastor at Erb Street Mennonite Church in Waterloo for 6 1/2 years. He served for many years as secretary (later, Executive Secretary and Conference Minister) of Indiana-Michigan Mennonite Conference, and for two years as moderator of the Ontario Mennonite Conference and the inter-Mennonite conference that later became Mennonite Church Eastern Canada. Gifted in vocal music, he organized and led numerous church choirs and taught many people around the church how to sing, how to read music, and how to sing solfeggio (the "do-re-mi's"). Friends may call Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Gathering Room at College Mennonite Church, Goshen, Indiana. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at College Mennonite Church. Memorials may be made to Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, Indiana, Goshen Home Care and Hospice, or College Mennonite Church.
