Obituary:
- Constance (Connie) Hilborn nee Stares (November 6th, 1926 – August 14, 2019)
Our beloved Mom, Connie has passed after a near 93 year journey. Predeceased by her husband Clifford (1920 – 1983) and son Gerald (1955 – 2009) and also by her 5 siblings (Kathleen, Victor, Gladys, Helen and Jack) and each of their spouses. Connie is survived by three sons – Tom, Tim and James (Shawna); 5 grandchildren – Connie (Chris), Shanna, Jerriann, Alex and Micaela; 7 great-grandchildren.
A self-described imp, she was youngest of six children. Connie left high school to help care for her mother (Ellen Lidbetter-Stares) and support the family by working at Scroggins Shoe factory in Galt. She met Cliff, a veteran of WW2, at a Legion dance in 1946 and they were married in 1948 moving to Preston. They and their four sons filled the house over the years with a menagerie of pets from mice to turtles and the home was seldom without a cat and or dog.
Connie enjoyed a near 20 year career at Kmart on Highway 8 till its closing in 1984. An ardent adventurer Connie traveled throughout Europe, saw Canada from coast to coast, and enjoyed many a bus trip with her friends. She also enjoyed pushing her luck in the casinos of Vegas, Rama and Windsor. In retirement Connie became a fixture as a volunteer at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital. Her contributions resulted in much recognition including the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. In addition to CMH, Connie gave many hours of her time to her church – St. Luke's Anglican and to the local Legions. Connie was an ardent card "shark" and often represented the Galt Legion branch in cribbage and Euchre tournaments throughout Ontario. A Celebration of Connie's Life will be held at the St. Luke's Anglican church 1485 Mary Ave. in Cambridge on Sunday September 29, 2019 from 12 - 2 p.m.
Thanks to the staff of St. Luke's Place (Cambridge) and Hillside Residence (Maryhill) for their care and support.
A private family internment at Memory Gardens has been held. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, Cambridge Memorial Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice in Connie's memory would be appreciated.
