- (Research):Elden Smith passed away suddenly Wednesday July 4, 2001 at the Martin Luther Memorial Home in Holt, MI., age 91 years. He was born Jan 5, 1910 in Ellington Township, the son the late William S. & Susanna (Dettweiler) Smith. He graduated from Caro High School in 1929.
Elden married Ida C. Thane on Aug 8, 1933 at her family home outside of Caro. In the early 1940's he owned and operated the Colwood Store. He was employed by Michigan Farm Bureau for about 25 years, in many different positions throughout the Thumb area, and later in the state office in Lansing. Elden lived in DeWitt and was the Mayor, later the City Manager and Police Chief in the early 1960's. When he retired in 1977 Elden and Ida moved to Harrison. In the mid 1980's they returned to Caro to live. Where ever they lived, Elden was very active in the United Brethren Churches and particularly the Colwood United Brethren in Christ Church in Caro.
Elden in survived by his wife, Ida of nearly 68 years and living at 5091 Willoughby Road in Holt, MI 48842; and by 2 children and their spouses, Theron L. & Helen Smith of Lansing and Ruth Ann & Mark Ralph of Sunfield, MI; 3 grandsons, 1 granddaughter and their spouses, Steve & Linda Smith of Huntington, IN; Stacy & Jamie Smith of Redford; Kristi & her fiancé, Joel Foudy and Ben Ralph all of Sunfield; 3 great grand children, Elizabeth, Brianna & Rebekah Smith; 4 brothers 4 sisters and their spouses, Alvin & Naomi Smith, Donald & Carol Smith all of Caro; William & Marian Smith of Knoxville, TN; Fred & JoAnn Smith of Frankenmuth; Mary Smith, Rosella Lehner both of Caro, Ruth Boggs of Pine Mountain KY; Pearl & Pete Venema of Cass City and many nieces and nephews. Elden was predeceased by 3 brothers and 1 sister; Roy, John and Richard Smith & Mabel K. Smith
Funeral Services will take place Saturday July 7, 2001 at the Colwood United Brethren In Christ Church in Caro at 11 am. Rev. Phil Whipple will officiate with burial to follow in the Almer Twp. Cemetery in Caro. The pall-bearers are Ben Ralph, Steve & Stacy Smith, Joel Foudy, Lowell & David Smith, Vic Moynihan and Jerry Toner.
