- (Research):Mrs. Anna Schmidt Dies
The last surviving pioneer settler of Sebringville, Perth County, died in Rodney Monday evening, in the person of Mrs. Anna Schmidt. A native of Alsace-Loraine, Mrs. Schmidt migrated to Canada more than 70 years ago, landing at New York, and making her way to Buffalo, and thence by stagecoach into Waterloo County. Later she and her family settled in Perth County, on the Huron Trail, at Sebringville, where she resided for more than 60 years. On Saturday of last week Mrs. Schmidt celebrated her 91st birthday. She was in possession of all her faculties to the end, and had a most remarkable memory, recalling little incidents that occured in her girlhood. Twelve chidren were born to her, seven of whom are still living. They are: A. A. Schmidt of Sebringville; Mrs. W. H. Otto, Elmira; J.E. Schmidt, Guelph; E. A. Schmidt, Rodney; Mrs. E. Hill, Spokane, Washington; H. F. Schmidt, Stratford; and Mrs. (Rev.) H. L. Mernes of Hespeler. Forty grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren also survive.
