- Eli Good was born near Wakarusa, Elkhart County Indiana on September 22, 1865. Eli received a common school education. He married Elizabeth Dettweiler on November 7, 1886. Eli taught school from 1882 to 1897. Soon after, he was ordained to the ministry of the United Brethren in Christ Church in Grand Rapids, MI and served as pastor and presiding elder for some time. Mr. Good substituted for ministers in the very northern part of Michigan preaching in Congregational, Methodist, Baptist and Finnish Lutheran Churches. He was acting pastor for nearly a year at the Hancock Congregation Church. Although he never attended high school himself, he was a well read man and taught at Demmen (near Hancock) for five years. Eli Good and family lived at Wakarusa, IN Goshen, IN, and Dutton and St Johns, MI before taking up homesteading in Alberta, Canada in about 1910. Lulu their eldest daughter remained in Michigan as she was already married to Leonard Mniece.
The family, Eli, his wife Elizabeth and their children (Bernice and R Allen,) returned to Michigan in 1925 and established their home in Hancock at 1209 Roberts Street. Son John Victor Good remained in Alberta with his wife and family. Eli taught school and preached in various churches in the vicinity when a church was without a pastor. Following his retirement in 1936 and some health problems, he resorted to his other favorite pastime of reading.
